In July 2008, Nokia conducted a consumer survey to find out what people think and do about mobile phones recycling. The survey involved interviewing six thousand five hundred people from thirteen different countries including Germany, Russia, Finland, Sweden, USA, UK, UAE, China, Nigeria, Brazil, Indonesia and India. The survey revealed that 74% of people don’t think about recycling their used phones even though 72% believed that recycling them would make a big difference in the environment. It was also interesting to see that although only 3% of the phones are recycled, only 4% are being thrown away. 44% of people in the survey keep their mobiles at home, never to be used again. Some are giving their phones to families or friends and only sixteen percent of the public surveyed recycle mobile phones for cash.

The survey revealed that one of the major reasons why people don’t recycle their phones was because they did not know that it could be recycled. The public are not aware that even old mobiles that are not working are still re-useable. In fact, according to Nokia, about 80% of phone components can be recycled. Materials from damaged mobiles are recycled and used to make park benches, kettles and even music instruments like saxophones. Precious metals that are found in phones are recovered to make new components for the mobiles. Plastics that can’t be recycled are use as fuels for the recycling process. In terms of awareness, 80% of people in the United Kingdom know that mobile phones can be recycled, but only 17% of the public in India know that mobile phones can be re-used.

Another reason why the public don’t recycle their mobile is that they don’t know how and they don’t know where to recycle them.
